What you will see
The Jardines del Real, known locally in València as Viveros, are the city's most emblematic gardens according to the municipality, valued for their history and cultural, ecological and landscape worth. They contain 2,769 specimens of 167 botanical species. Among those worth seeking out are the rose garden, the avenue of Washingtonia filifera and Washingtonia robusta palms, jacarandas (Jacaranda mimosifolia), Podocarpus macrophyllus, ficus trees (Ficus macrophylla and Ficus nitida) and date palms (Phoenix dactylifera). There is also an educational route for identifying trees and palms.
In the early 19th century the existing structures were demolished as they were considered a threat to the city in case of bombardment by the French army, and the gardens were reborn in the 20th century. Inside you will find the Museo de Ciencias Naturales (Natural Sciences Museum), which dates from the 19th century and was designed by Rodrigo Botet, organised across five areas; the municipal tree observatory, which the municipality presents as the only one of its kind in Spain; and a children's traffic park where young visitors learn about road safety.
