What you will see

The Torres de Serranos were one of the gates of Valencia's late medieval city walls. Master builder Pere Balaguer constructed them between 1392 and 1398 in dressed stone: two large pentagonal towers flanking a gateway with a semicircular arch. The design appears to have been based on the Real gate of Poblet monastery, but these towers are larger, so the overall effect resembles a triumphal arch.

Look at the façade facing the city: it has large arched openings at different heights. These functioned as viewing stands, where prominent families watched festivals and the arrival of important figures. From 1586 to 1887 the towers served as a prison for nobles and knights. From the upper terraces you can see across the city and over the old course of the Turia river.
