What you will see
The collection started with what Manuel González Martí and Amelia Cuñat gathered and donated to remain in València: the museum was established by decree on 7 February 1947 with around 6,000 works. Ceramics occupy the second floor and are arranged by period:
- Antiquity: from Prehistory to the Iron Age, with Greek ceramics from the 6th and 5th centuries BC, Iberian and Roman terra sigillata.
- Islamic world: pieces from the 10th century in green and blackish tones and a 13th-century fountain found in plaza de la Figuereta.
- Christian Middle Ages: green and manganese from Paterna and Teruel, gilded work from Manises in the 15th century, tiles and socarrats.
- 18th and 19th centuries: the Real Fábrica de Alcora, founded in 1727, popular earthenware from Manises, Onda, Ribesalbes and Biar, and industrial pottery from Sargadelos, Cartagena or Pickman.
- 20th century: Mariano Benlliure, Alfonso Blat, Picasso, Llorens Artigas, Cumella and Elena Colmeiro.
On the same floor is a recreation of a Valencian kitchen with tiles from the 18th and 19th centuries. The museum is inside the Palacio del Marqués de Dos Aguas, which has its own entry.
